Aelis Photonics Names Alan Willner to Advisory Board
| Noted Optical Communications Expert Will Help Aelis Strategize
Launch of Its Breakthrough Optical Equalization Technology
| NETANYA, Israel, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Aelis Photonics, Inc., an emerging innovator in dynamic optical signal processing, today announced Alan E. Willner, Ph.D., as a member of its advisory board. Dr. Willner, a renowned authority in optical communications, founded Phaethon Communications, a designer and manufacturer of dispersion compensators for high-speed optical networks that was recently acquired by TeraXion. He will help Aelis launch a breakthrough optical equalization technology designed to extend the reach and speed of optical networks.
"As we move toward introducing our technology and products to the market, Alan will play an important role in forming our strategy," said Menachem Tipris, Aelis Photonics' chief executive officer. "Given the esteemed reputation Alan holds in the optical communications field, we are excited to have him join our team and look forward to his contribution to our unique technology."
Commented Willner: "Aelis' strategy is to adaptively address multiple fiber-based signal-degrading effects over many WDM optical channels with a single device. Such a breakthrough could make a dramatic difference in the cost of deploying tunable compensators."
Dr. Willner, who earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Columbia University, is currently professor of electrical engineering systems at the University of Southern California. Earlier, he was a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories and at Bellcore (now Telcordia Technologies). In addition, he has long been active in various industry organizations, holding key positions in the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (IEEE LEOS), including editor-in-chief of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology and the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, V.P. for Technical Affairs for the IEEE LEOS, and co-chair of the OSA Science and Engineering Council.
Widely recognized for his achievements, Willner has received the Presidential Faculty Fellows Award from the White House, the Packard Foundation Fellowship, the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award, the Fulbright Foundation Senior Scholar Award, the USC Associate's Award for University-Wide Excellence in Teaching, OSA Fellow, and the IEEE LEOS Distinguished Lecturer Award.
More About Aelis Photonics
Aelis Photonics was founded in 2001 by Menachem Tipris and Varda Herskowits, Ph.D., veterans of the Israeli technology industry, with seed funding from Israel Seed Partners. Incorporated in Delaware, Aelis has an R&D center in Netanya, Israel, staffed by a team of engineers with core competencies in wireless, optical transmission components, semiconductors, and advanced signal processing.
In addition to Tipris, the management team includes Eran Yarkoni, chairman of the board, who actively directs the company's business strategy. A partner in Israel Seed Partners, Yarkoni was previously CEO of CyOptics, a leading
developer of high-speed active optical components, and before that served 18 years at Intel Corp.
Other top executives are Dr. Herskowits, chief technology officer, with more than 20 years of experience in transport phenomena in dispersive media; Yosi Shani, Ph.D., vice president of physics, a veteran of AT&T Bell Laboratories, with 12 years of experience in integrated optics components; and Anthony J. Weiss, chief scientist, a professor at Tel Aviv University, with more than 25 years of experience in digital signal processing.
Serving as technical advisor is Mark Shtaif, Ph.D., a senior staff member of the Physical Electronics Department at Tel Aviv University and formerly principal architect at Celion Networks and principal technical staff member at AT&T Research Laboratories' Lightwave Networks Research Department. Joining Yarkoni on the board are Tipris, Herskowits and Jonathan Medved, general partner of Israel Seed.
